Nick (Nixe) Mellick Jr. Scholarship was formed to honor Nixe. Throughout his life, he was a bush pilot, fur trader, lodge owner, fishing guide, Native leader, businessman and historian. He has been described as particularly adept at walking in both the Native and non-Native worlds.

Mr. Nixe Mellick studied business at Bowling Green University in Ohio. KEF is honoring his memory with this scholarship to fund TKC Region shareholders and descendents in pursuit of their degree in a Business and other related fields.

Amount

The scholarship will range in an amount based on the donations received for it from individuals, businesses, and corporations. The amount for the first year is $2,500. The amount for the following years will likely be $3,500 or more.

Qualifications

  1. Recipient must demonstrate motivation, academic, and leadership potential.
  2. Recipient must be in good academic standing with a Cumulative G.P.A. above a 3.25.
  3. Recipient must be attending a college or vocational institution the following fall.
  4. Recipient must be going into a business-related field.
  5. Recipient must be returning or contributing to the Kuskokwim Region after degree is received or training completed.
  6. Native Preference applies to this private scholarship.

The Nixie Mellick Scholarship committee composed of members from The Kuskokwim Corporation, and Kuskokwim Educational Foundation will evaluate applications. The award will be announced at the Kuskokwim Corporation annual meeting scheduled for the first Saturday in June.
